Major Squad Changes Hit Sri Lankan Campaign in Pakistan
Sri Lanka’s T20 tri-series campaign in Pakistan has encountered a significant setback with the withdrawal of two key players from the squad. White-ball captain Charith Asalanka and pace bowler Asitha Fernando are returning home after falling ill, forcing the team management to make urgent leadership changes ahead of the crucial tournament.
Shanaka Steps Up as Stand-in Captain
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) announced on Monday that experienced all-rounder Dasun Shanaka will assume captaincy duties for the remainder of the tri-nation tournament. Shanaka, who previously led the national side in various formats, brings valuable leadership experience during this challenging period for the team.
As a replacement for Fernando in the bowling attack, uncapped batsman Pavan Rathnayake has received his call-up to the T20I squad. Rathnayake recently made his ODI debut during the third match against Pakistan on Sunday, scoring 32 runs off 37 deliveries.
Precautionary Medical Measures
According to the official SLC statement, both Asalanka and Fernando are being sent home as a precautionary measure. The decision ensures they receive appropriate medical attention and adequate recovery time before upcoming international assignments. The cricket board has not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of their illnesses.
Tournament Format and Context
The tri-series, featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, kicks off on Tuesday in Rawalpindi. Each participating nation will face the other twice in the round-robin stage, with the top two teams progressing to the November 29 final. The tournament serves as crucial preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
This development comes after Pakistan completed a comprehensive 3-0 ODI series whitewash against Sri Lanka. The absence of their captain and a frontline fast bowler presents additional challenges for the visiting team as they aim to bounce back in the shorter format.
