ISLAMABAD: Authorities released Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl leader Farrukh Khokhar shortly after detaining him at a security checkpoint on Srinagar Highway for lacking proper weapon documentation during routine inspection.
Khokhar, a well-known political personality from the twin cities and cousin of former Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, was initially taken to Aabpara Police Station following the checkpoint stop. Officers discovered he was carrying a weapon without presenting valid licensing documents at the time.
Station House Officer Asim Ghaffar initially confirmed that Khokhar failed to produce a weapon permit during the inspection. However, authorities subsequently verified that his SMG license was legitimate after family members retrieved the documentation from his residence and presented it to officials.
“The weapon is properly licensed. After verification of credentials, he was released,” stated SHO Ghaffar, clarifying the misunderstanding.
Khokhar hails from the politically influential Khokhar family of Rawalpindi, with deep roots in Pakistan’s political landscape. His father, Imtiaz Khokhar (known as Taji Khokhar), and uncle, former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Nawaz Khokhar, have maintained prominent political positions over the years.
In a significant political development earlier this year, Farrukh Khokhar officially joined JUI-F on July 19 at Dera Taji Khokhar near the former Islamabad airport. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman personally welcomed him during the ceremony, expressing optimism about strengthening party presence in the capital region.
“Khokhar’s inclusion will invigorate our political movement in Islamabad and Rawalpindi,” Maulana Fazlur Rehman remarked during the induction ceremony.
Despite his family’s traditional PPP affiliation, Khokhar cited admiration for Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s principled leadership and commitment to national values as motivation for joining JUI-F, marking an independent political trajectory from his family’s established associations.
